Bond Selection for Production Grinding
Proper grinding wheel selection is essential to ensure that the required part quality, production rate, and overall cost per part is achieved. Although the type of abrasive grain is often a primary driver of wheel selection, the bonding type can also play a key role in optimizing a grinding operation.
In general terms, the abrasive grit size range for grinding wheels runs between 12 grit for rough grinding operations, such as those found in steel mills, and 220 grit for very fine/precision grinding operations. Again, there is no industry standard, but in general terms: Coarse grits run 12 to 24 Medium grits run 30 to 70
Ask the Experts: Choose the Right Type of Grinding Wheel
According to Modern Machine Shop, a coarser grit wheel offers a high metal removal rate —its big abrasive particles will rip off larger chunks of metal with every pass. Coarse grit makes a quicker cut, but it can leave a rough finish. A fine grit wheel may take longer to do the job, but if you need a smooth finish, it’s worth the wait.
